There are a lot of third-party iPhone apps for all sorts of different things. You can use one of the social media dashboards to access your Facebook account, for example, but sometimes it’s better just to stick to the actual official Facebook app. The same kind of thing applies to doing your shopping (and your shopping research) on your iPhone, because official store apps necessarily provide you with official information.
We’ve previously covered a range of free shopping apps for the iPhone that should help you score some better deals, but what about the actual apps for the real stores? What are some of the major retailers that offer their own iPhone apps?
Well, this should really come as little surprise. When you open up the official Apple Store app on your Apple iPhone or iPad, you gain access to the full catalog of Apple products that you can buy directly from your mobile device. You can use it to buy MacBooks and iPods. Ironically enough, you can use your iPhone to buy a new iPhone. The app also lets you custom configure your new Mac, add engraving to your iPod, sign up for workshops, make Genius Bar reservations, and more.
The Home Depot
If you’re more of the handy type and you’re working on some sort of home improvement project, you’ll want to add The Home Depot to your collection of store apps. You can browse through over 350,000 products, buying them from the app and picking them up from the store. There’s also a store locator in there, so you know which location is closest. If you’re in the store, you can scan a barcode to read product reviews too.
Unlike the first two store apps, the IKEA Catalog app doesn’t let you buy any products directly. You still have to trek your way to the nearest warehouse, befuddle your way through that maze, and somehow end up munching on a cheap hot dog and soda along the way. However, having a digital catalog is a heck of a lot more convenient than lugging around a physical catalog that’s as large as most college textbooks.
Macy’s Store App
Did you know they do more than Thanksgiving Day parades? The Macy’s app allows you to browse through the variety of products sold at the store, but there’s also access to a number of special offers, including exclusive discounts and promotions. Like the Home Depot app, barcode scanning is supported here too for product details, pricing and customer reviews. Your Macy’s credit card can be managed from the app as well.
The Target app for iPhone allows for a mobile shopping experience, including the ability to add to your cart and checkout, all from a mobile-optimized interface. You’ll get a store finder, access to daily deails, wedding registry management, TargetLists shopping lists, digital gift cards, digital coupons twice a month, product ratings, a barcode scanner, and prescription refills.
We’ve all been there. We go to the store with a specific product in mind, but we haven’t the faintest of ideas where to find that product in the store. The Walgreens app has a super handy floor map of the store, so when you say that you want to buy toothpaste, it shows you the exact location in the store where they keep the toothpaste. Of course, there’s more than a map here. You’ve also got pharmacy features, photo printing features, reward card management, coupons, barcode scanners, and more.
Walmart for iPhone
Like many of the other store apps on this list, the Walmart app also has a barcode and QR code scanner. This way, you don’t have to go hunting for one of those rare price checkers in the store, just to see how much your box of cereal is going to cost you. The app also has a smart shopping list, it displays the local ads, and it provides digital coupons for extra savings.
