NFL Football Apps for iPhone and iPadMany people already use their iPhones to help them keep in shape or to complement their running, but what about when you’d rather just watch someone else being athletic? The NFL season is upon us, so whether you’re a fan of Ray Lewis or Eli Manning, Clay Matthews or DeSean Jackson, you’re going to want to have some awesome NFL football apps on your iPhone or iPad.

Yes, most of us are going to be glued to our televisions on any given Sunday, but there’s absolutely something to be said about that “second screen” experience, especially for the other days of the week. You could be a stats junkie or maybe you’re involved in a fantasy league. Whatever the case, grab that digital pigskin, hurdle your way over to the iTunes App Store and have a look at some of these iPhone football apps.

Even though this app is officially being provided by Verizon Wireless, it’s compatible with iPads and iPhones that aren’t with Big Red. To be fair, you do need to have a Verizon device to get access to “selected premium content and services.” Get videos, highlights, breaking news, blogs and more.

Uh oh. You got dragged out to another Sunday brunch with the in-laws, peeling you away from your precious HDTV and that precious gridiron action. That doesn’t mean that you can’t watch your games. NFL Sunday Ticket on your television means never missing a game, but there is an accompanying app so you can live stream all the games too. This has to be one of the most useful NFL football apps around, because it lets you watch every game, no matter where you are. It also includes highlights, scores, schedules, and instant stats. The app is free, but you do need to pay for the NFL Sunday Ticket package from DIRECTV.

Some of us like to watch the game for the love of the game. Lots of other people want to get much more involved with fantasy football. This app from NFL Enterprises is geared specifically for the official NFL.com fantasy football league, keeping track of all those fantasy points for your team. But it’s not just about tracking stats. This app can also let you set your lineup and perform player transactions, as well as manage multiple teams and get official player news and injury updates.

Football Legends

All of the other NFL football apps described thus far are about keeping up the National Football League in some fashion, like tracking stats, streaming live video, or managing your fantasy team. This app is different. It’s a trivia game with over 500 questions, testing to see just how well you know the game that you claim you love. Some questions are certainly easier than others, like asking how many minutes are in a regular game, but some can get pretty obscure too. How well do you know your football?

Madden NFL 12

There’s no football video game better than the Madden NFL franchise. While I couldn’t find a new version for the 2012-2013 season, this would is positively stellar. It is a mobile game, so it won’t be as robust as its console counterparts, but this is a great way to play some football when you’re not watching a real game.

NFL Kicker 13

Maybe it’s because Electronic Arts didn’t push out Madden NFL 13 that this little football game has surged in popularity on iTunes. As its title implies, this game focuses solely on the kicker’s position, using a simple “flick” mechanic. All 32 official NFL teams are here, including the new uniforms and equipment. Can you compete with a guy like Sebastian Janikowski?
