Canadian News AppsWith so much going on, it can be quite the challenge keeping up with all the happenings in the world. Having the global perspective is a good thing, to be sure, but sometimes you want to know more about the news in your own backyard. I’m a proud Canadian and that’s why I want to have some good Canadian news apps on my mobile devices. You could sift through something like Google News, but having the right native apps on your iPad or iPhone can make things a lot easier, especially if they’re already filtered by topic and geographic region.

So, what are some of the best iPad or iPhone apps for Canadian news? Here are a few of the bigger highlights from the iTunes App Store. Even though they may be Canadian news apps, that doesn’t mean that they’re necessarily restricted to news in Canada either!

CTV News

CTV News App for iPhone

iTunes Store: (Free)

One of the most trusted sources for news in Canada happens to have an iOS app too. The CTV News app for iPad and iPhone has a section that highlights all the top stories from across the country, but there’s also a “local” section where you can narrow down the news to a major city like Toronto or Regina. There are additional sections for entertainment, health, science and tech, politics, and sports. All the stories appear to be largely text-based (with some images), but it means you don’t have to wait up for Sandie Rinaldo or Lisa LaFlamme each night.

CTV Morning Live Traffic App

Some may say that this doesn’t belong in a list of Canadian news apps, but I beg to differ. Knowing what you’re going to encounter on your morning commute is some of the most important news you’ll have for the day. Couple this app with your iPhone navigation app of choice and you’ll get to and from the office in the most expedient and most efficient manner possible.

CBC Hockey

I realize that this is going to rub some salt in the wounds of hockey fans, given the current lockout, but you should save the CBC Hockey app to your iDevice for whenever the action does return to the ice. Just as having some good NFL football apps can enhance your gridiron-watching experience, this hockey app is great for keeping up with the Canucks, the Canadiens, or whatever other team you want to follow…and, yes, that includes the American teams too.

CTV is one of the bigger names in Canadian news, but it’s easily rivaled by CBC News. This accompanying app gives you “all the news that matters to you” with the touch of your finger. You get the latest news from your own region, as well as across Canada and around the world. What’s great is that there are full-screen news videos that can accompany the written articles, as well as a special mobile edition of CBC News: The National. The high quality photo galleries are pretty great.

Metro News

It makes sense that one of the most popular free newspapers in the country also happens to have a free app for the iPad and iPhone. The Metro News app has editions that publish in many major cities, including Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Halifax, and Windsor. You get all the news that you’d find in your local paper, plus more.

CNW Canadian News App

CNW Newswire

CNW Newswire

CNW Group is Canada’s leading newswire provider, so you know that when it comes to Canadian news apps, they have no problem staying on top of things. This app has customized versions for the iPad and the iPhone, letting you save photos, read news, and even watch videos. There’s also the ability to set up alerts for companies and organizations that matter to you and your industry.

CKNW News Talk 980

CKNW AM980 in Vancouver

iTunes Store: (Free)

The main appeal here is having an easy way to access this popular news radio station without finding the nearest AM radio. You get all the latest information on Metro Vancouver, but you can also read up on the written articles too. The audio programs include The Bill Good Show, SportsTalk with Dan Russell, and the Christy Clark Show.

Canadian Newspapers by Sunflowerapps

iTunes Store: ($1.99)

Yes, this is the only non-free offering in this list of Canadian news apps, but it’s for good reason. For just $1.99, you gain access to some of the biggest newspapers in Canada, like the Calgary Herald, The Globe and Mail, The Times-Colonist, the London Free Press, and The Province. Articles can be shared through social media and hte in-app browser lets you read the original articles.
