BlackBerry Z10 Smartphone with BlackBerry 10The battle arena for smartphone domination has a new combatant in the form of the BlackBerry Z10, the first device from the company formerly known as RIM and now simply known as BlackBerry to boast the all new BlackBerry 10 operating system. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your older BlackBerry or even making the switch from iOS or Android to BB10, then you’ll want to know about what BlackBerry 10 apps are available right now that you should download first.

At launch, BlackBerry 10 will have 70,000 apps available through BlackBerry World. This is a far cry from the nearly one milliion apps that you’d find in either the iPhone App Store or the Google Play Store, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a few gems in here either. Remember that Facebook and Twitter are already built into BB10!

Yes, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) was once the “killer app” that differentiated the BlackBerry family from all the other smartphones, but it has since been usurped by other cross-platform protocols like WhatsApp. Another alternative that you’ll want to consider is IM+ Pro, which offers a unifed interface where you can send and receive your instant messages through such IM services as Facebook, Skype, Google Talk, AIM, Weibo, Jabber, and even good old ICQ.

One of my favorite Android travel apps is TuneIn Radio, because it lets me tune into all sorts of local and international radio stations by way of the Internet. One of the BlackBerry 10 apps that provides a similar kind of functionality is called Nobex. You get access to your country’s radio stations for free, but you’ll need the premium version if you want to stream the over 16,000 radio stations from more than 100 countries around the world. Podcasts are supported too.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like going all the way to the airport only to learn that my flight is delayed for four hours. Stay ahead of the game by using this app for BlackBerry 10, giving you free, live flight tracking. You can see real-time information about your flight status and even view the tracking map for your flight. An added bonus feature that’s pretty nifty is that you can also see nearby flights in the sky overhead using this app too.
