Back to School and Chemistry Class

It may be a tough pill to swallow for many of the students out there, but yes indeed, it is time to go back to school. Thankfully, technology has come a long way and it really does play a critical role in today’s education. You already know about some of the useful back to school iPhone apps that are out there, but what about the reference apps for Android devices?

Just about every tidbit of information that you need can be found on the Internet, but you may not always have omnipresent access to the web or you may not have the time to search for it. That’s why it’s prudent to have some quick access offline apps for back to school, since you can quickly get at that fact or formula when you really need it. Just remember: no cheating on your tests!

When I was still in high school, the be-all and end-all of graphing calculators was the TI-86 by Texas Instruments. It wasn’t necessarily all that fancy, but it had all the functions that you needed and it certainly had plenty of buttons. But just as we have largely done away with buttons on our smartphones, we can do the same with our calculators. You get all the functions you need from a scientific calculator, like trig functions and inverse numbers, as well as the features of a graphing calculator like polar graphs and parametric functions. And yes, you get pinch to zoom too, which I definitely did not have on my TI-86.

I am showing my age. In my day, we had encyclopedias, almanacs and Carmen Sandiego. If you need some really quick facts for the countries of the world, though, using an offline reference app like this can be so much easier. There’s information here about economy, transport, military and government, among other areas. The database size is 99MB, so you’ll want to make sure that you have ample space on your Android smartphone or tablet before you download it all. The random article of the day widget is pretty neat too.

How do you spell that again? What does that mean? What was that word that I looked up a couple days ago? As the name of the app clearly indicates, this is an offline English dictionary that can give you the definitions of words when you don’t have access to the Internet or don’t want to burn through your data plan. The database has over 150,000 words, pllus 68,000 inflected forms. There are bookmarks, history, Google Quick Search Box integration and Moon+ Reader support.

Every chemistry classroom has the periodic table of the elements posted somewhere on the wall, but you probably don’t camp out in chemistry class all the time. There’s not a heck of a lot to using this app, but it does mean that you have the full periodic table at your fingertips with 118 elements. This gives you not only the symbol and the atomic number, but also the pertinent information about the thermodynamic, material, electromagnetic, nuclear and reactivity properties. There’s also the electron shell diagram for each element, which is useful when you’re trying to figure out those reactions and equations.

The length of the hypotneuse of a right triangle is equal to the square root of the sum of the square of the other two sides. You’ll come across a lot of formulas and equations for just about everything in math class and it can be very difficult to memorize them all. When you need to quickly look up formulas, having a well-organized reference app for when you go back to school is positively invaluable. It has formulas for everything from the law of exponents to the law of cosines, from integrals of simple functions to boolean algebra.
